Copyright is a big conceptual issue and we considered placing it in a more prominent position among the sub-menus A simple shorthand might suggest the question is partly a legal issue and partly a functional one The laws of course are based on supposed reasons such as the claim incentives must remain stable for individuals to put forth the required effort involved in the job. In other words if copyright does not protect the profit motive then no one will be interested in making the effort. On the other hand, if you want to look at the question of how well useful information is propagated and disseminated within a given population then it becomes at least a possibility that copyright may dampen what could have been a wider dissemination of the information
