Food Groups Nine subcategories are suggested which include meat, dairy, fruit vegetables, legumes, nuts and seeds, seafood, grains, and beverages. We hope to offer several different types of lists, or links to those who have lists at their sites which match the function we are trying describe For instance we hope to have a very large comprehensive list and then separate smaller list of the more common foods In theory it would be lovely to have these lists placed in a spreadsheet format where the specific foods could be referred to in a certain specific contexts These contexts would include subjects such as the nutritional content of the food, fiber, and perhaps the acid/alkaline nature of the food Other possible contexts would be in regard to how the food in question is grown, stored and prepared These categories are parts of the Growing and Cooking menus, so additional;l or at least redundant information will likely be there as well Thus in theory we might have a spread sheet that could compare the nutritional content of a certain food stuff grown by various farming methods, organic, bio intensive, bio dynamic etc
Outside of spread sheets we hope to describe individual categories in some more general terms , such as obvious examples
like nuts and seeds are high in fat and fruits are high in carbohydrate Beyond nutritional content alone there are additional consideration such as so-called anti-nutrients which interfere with absorption of nutrients. Gluten and Phytic acid being well known examples And finally such a chart my also include more esoteric ideas such as whether foods are acidifying or alkalizing, Yin or Yang, or warming or cooling
The information addressed in these categories is limited to the physical constituents within specific compounds in any given specific foodstuff In the following categories of Diets, and Diet and Illness we take this information a bit further and discuss some of the health implications of these foods based on the seemingly scientific understandings we have on the health effects they impart
Diets Basically we have two clear purposes. here One is to provide a categorized set of links for resources in regard to specific diets, and the second is to expand on the rationales and evidence for certain health claims However the discussion of health implications of diet in this section is of a general nature In other words whether vegan or paleo diets are generally better for health and not in regard to specific conditions or symptoms That information is in the Diet and Illness menu
Diets and Illness In theory any spreadsheet would be arranged with two separate configurations One would serve as an effective tool for both those who are starting their search for an illness or condition, for which certain foods and herbs may be effective and the second would conversely list a specific food and then be cross referenced for the foods and herbs for which their evidence of efficacy
Both the Diets and Diet and Illness sections would include links and discussion of some of the best clinical studies of both certain categories of diets and individualized foodstuffs however true clinical studies of this sort are relatively rare mostly due to the logistical problems in performing such studies After all you cannot really lock people into facilities to carry out double blind placebo controlled dietary studies. In general many diet studies are based on questionnaire respondents and demographically studies However even with these limitations there is often strong evidence that certain diets are documented as effective such at the Ketogenic diet for epilepsy for example And while anecdotal stories and practitioner records are not scientific they also can seemingly help us arrive at diets that may be helpful for various health concerns
